Caillard Barossa Valley Mataro 2013

Grape Variety: Mataro

An icon in the Australian Wine industry, Andrew Caillard MW, and his wife Bobby, launched Caillard Wines after 37 years in the wine industry. Andrew Caillard holds a Master of Wine, recognised as one of the highest standards of professional knowledge in the industry.

Specialising in Barossa Valley Mataro, Caillard Wines aims at making wines that are “delicious to drink, different and pleasing”. To achieve this, fruit is sourced from two exceptional Mataro vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The transparency of Giorgiadis vineyard fruit against the opaqueness of “Schiller’s” brings an expressive tension and balance. After traditional vinification in open-fermenters the wine is matured in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barriques for an extended period of around 16 months to allow the fruit to develop richness, volume and complexity. Vineyard characters, winemaking nuances and maturation notes are all harmonised in the wine through intuitive feel and rigorous blending of barrels.

"Very good crimson colour; more supple and well-proportioned than most single variety mataros; the savoury tannins are there, but there is a rich vein of spicy, dark fruits running through the length of the medium-bodied, elegant palate"  - Rated 95 points, James Halliday
