The allure of pinot noir

Pinot noir is having a moment in Australian wine circles

The hottest red grape variety in Australia today, pinot noir is a moreish, easy-drinking wine style. With light, fruit-forward, perfume characteristics coupled with a soft tannin profile, pinot has become the go-to wine for everything from relaxed social gatherings through to special occasions.

Part of its appeal is its flexibility. With low tannins and consistently high acidity, pinot noir can match with dishes as diverse as charcuterie and terrines,  oily fish like smoked salmon, a minute steak with chips or a firm, semi-aged cheese.  

Pinot’s growth in popularity is contrasted by its comparatively tiny production. In 2018 only 53,000 tonnes or 3% of the 1.8 million tonnes that comprised the total Australian grape harvest were pinot noir. It's not a cheap wine to make, either: after grenache, pinot noir fetched the highest price per tonne of all grapes, white or red, this year.  

As a young wine, pinot noir can be juicy and fruity, becoming complex and alluring with age. 

Vineyard plantings in Australia for pinot noir are generally confined to cool-climate regions where lower temperatures throughout the growing period - crucial to making top-quality pinot - help the wine retain a natural acidity and freshness. Here are some of the best:

  • Tasmania is perfectly situated to growing pinot noir. Every vintage the island State’s reputation grows as a world-class producer with styles ranging on the flavour spectrum from perfumed, earthy and strawberry to ripe, dark berry fruits layered with oak. 

  • One hour north-east of Melbourne is the Yarra Valley. best known for its superb quality pinot noir and chardonnay. The valley’s climate is perfect to deliver world-class wines of structure and complexity that are consistently considered Australia’s best pinot noirs. 

  • The Mornington Peninsula with its proximity to Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean, is a region almost purpose-built for pinot noir. Its diverse micro-climates and soils make peninsula pinot some of the most diverse in Australia, ranging from light, delicate and aromatic to rich and complex. 
     
  • The Adelaide Hills and Tumbarumba in New South Wales prove that inland regions with high altitude and cold climates also create exceptional pinot noir. Tumbarumba,  at the foothills of the high country, and the Adelaide Hills, just 30 minutes from the CBD, enjoy bright sunny days after piercing cold nights to create silky, cherry-infused pinot noir. 

  • The Henty Wine Region, in south-western Victoria, 300km west of Melbourne and 500km south-east of Adelaide, is where Seppelt winery produces pinot noir. Seppelt is renowned for unique wine styles, including the popular sparkling shiraz and pinot noir’s cousin, pinot meunier. Higher in acidity and finer than pinot noir, ‘meunier’  carries a higher alcohol content. Seppelt’s version is supple, spicy and generous and a fascinating example of this variety, and its potential in Australia.
